Book Review: The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey

The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey

Oh my goodness!! I loved it! A light mystery interwoven with a little historical fiction and enough cultural diversity and women's issues to keep my brain thoroughly delighted the whole way through! Set in 1920's Bombay, the female protagonist must solve a crime while navigating the culture of female seclusion and women's legal rights in her country. I am devastated that my library does not have any more of the author's works.... I will have to hunt them down!

Book Review: Food: What the Heck Should I Eat? by Mark Hyman

This book contains fairly clear explanations of the types of food we should include in our diets. It's a pretty common sense approach espousing whole real foods. I like that he doesn't exclude whole categories - like dairy or wheat -but explains why one should limit them - and which varieties are easier for our bodies to handle. It's an easy book to read and backs up much of the current real food philosophies.... I gave it a 3 because there isn't much new in it - I kind of felt like it was more of the usual..

Book Review: White Chrysanthemum by Mary Lynn Bracht

White Chrysanthemum by Mary Lynn Bracht

Loved IT!! Historical fiction and a gripping story of two Korean sisters caught up in wartime horrors. It is terrible and it is lovely at the same time... I was sorry to see it end!

Book Review: The Microbiome Solution by Robynne Chutkan

Okay - I confess - I am a health food book junkie! And since I had 2 major surgeries within 2 weeks a couple of years ago... followed by 6 weeks of multiple antibiotics 6 months later..... I've also been a GUT Balance book junkie! So - I have to say that this book is similar to many others. It tells us many things we already know - our diets should be mostly plants... gluten, sugar and dairy contribute to digestive problems... So in one way - this book is 'more of the same'. Yet I did find a few nuggets to help on my personal journey - and look forward to reading the author's other books looking for more :-) Little life hacks that make creating healthier eating habits a little more do-able... Definitely worth the read.... a thumbs up for the healthy living seeker..

Book Review: Carnegie's Maid by Marie Benedict

Carnegie's Maid by Marie Benedict

Loved it!! A well-written historical fiction that kept my interest from beginning to end! The story takes place in the American Civil War time frame and contains a lot of information about the rise of industry and immigrant poverty.... it gave my brain a lot to ponder and a great story with an unlikely female protagonist woven throughout. I am already searching for more by this author!
